| Equine Dentistry |
There are a number of schools and academies around the world where you can learn about Equine Dentistry, some of the training courses offered in the UK can be as short as 2 days of theory work and unfortunately there are a lot of people offering services who have had no formal training. After a lot of research, consideration and on the advice of other dentists who had trained in the UK, I decided that the USA was the best place to train so I went to the 'Academy of Equine Dentistry' in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, USA.

People carrying out dental services use different titles when they advertise their services. I am an Equine Dental Technician (EqDT). The next levels of training within the academy are Certified Equine Dentist (300 hours), Advanced Equine Dentist (500 hours) and Master Equine Dentist (1000 hours).
I have completed 350 hours of professional development courses and assessments, but I have not yet taken the practical part of my certification as to do so involves working with horses using power tools. I will only use power tools on horses that have been sedated by a vet, and as the vast majority of my clients neither want or need their horses sedated I have not as yet taken this exam. In November of this year I will take the practical element of the certification exam.
